Welcome to the BRYC Girls 14 National Team Page

Together, we will become a more highly skilled, competitive team that is built on a strong foundation of fundamental skills, has fun and loves to play volleyball, takes pride in our own actions, supports and respects our teammates, and strives to improve our volleyball leadership, communication, and mental preparedness. Our players and coaches will be focused on enthusiastically and skillfully competing at a sustained high level. Our goal is to prepare our players to compete for roster spots on their high school's varsity or junior varsity teams.

Our BRYC 14’s National Team tryout is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 12th, 3:30-6:00 pm at Lake Braddock Secondary School with makeup/call backs on Monday, November 14th, 7:00-9:00 pm at Irving Middle School. The players that attend our tryout can expect to participate in drills that provide opportunities for our coaches (Phil and Greg) to evaluate each player’s passing, setting, hitting, serving, and communication skills and observe hustle and enthusiasm. SAPT trainers will measure each player’s height and a few fitness/strength/agility indicators (e.g., vertical reach, vertical jump, maneuvering among cones).

Where are the Players from Last Season’s BRYC 16’s Girls National Team?
Last season (2015-16), we coached the BRYC Girls 16 National Team with a roster of 10 players. Nine of the players are playing for their high school varsity teams while one player’s high school does not have a volleyball team.

Co- head coaches Phil and Greg are CAP and IMPACT certified and provide substantial individual instruction to players in addition to team teaching. Individual and team improvement will be stressed, with the expectation that improvement will result in favorable tournament results. Greg and Phil have been coaching together with BRYC for 6 years. They have coached the following BRYC Girls teams: 18’s Vipers (2010-11), 14’s Heat (2011-12), 14’s Regional Cougars (2012-13), 14’s National (2013-14), 15’s National (2014-15), and 16’s National (2015-16). They are looking forward to coaching 14’s again. Phil and Greg have been friends for many years and often play volleyball together. Phil and Greg are of “one mind” when playing together, which makes for an effective coaching and teaching duo. Their goals are to help the girls love the game and acquire the skills to excel in volleyball.

We expect to practice two weeknights per week and a Saturday* or Sunday*. Practices will be 1.5 to 2 hours in duration, and weeknight practices are likely to start at 7:30 and/or 8:00 PM. We will practice in the Fairfax/Springfield/Burke area (for example, last season, we practiced at Kings Glen Elementary School and Merritt Academy). Our players are expected to participate in all practices (with exceptions for academic requirements and illness/injury).

*Saturday/Sunday practices will change days and times depending on the availability of gym space that we share with other BRYC teams. Saturday/Sunday practices may taper off after mid-February.

  • Volleyball is a game. We want our players, coaches, and players’ families to have fun.
  • Each coach will teach effectively and enthusiastically.
  • Each player will work hard. The more our players improve, the more fun we’ll have.
  • Each player will participate in all practices.
  • Each player will participate in her two sessions per week of SAPT fitness training.
  • Barring injury, each player is expected to be available to play in all matches of our tournaments, especially the multi-day tournaments.
